The Last Two Players to Back-to-Back Premier League Hat Tricks
On Monday, April 15th the world watched on in awe as a star was born. Well, if he wasn’t already. Cole Palmer has taken the Premier League by storm this season after being a relatively unheard-of last term. However, victory in the U21 European Championships with England last summer prompted Chelsea to fork out a whopping £50m to secure his services from Manchester City. And what a signing he has turned out to be.
Cole Palmer Continues To Shine
The Blues have languished in the top flight this season, and they are now a whopping 4/1 outsider to finish in the top six this term, never mind the top four, an almighty fall from grace considering the fact that they were lifting the UEFA Champions League just three years ago. But while the club has faltered there has been one solitary success to come out of their disastrous campaign.
That of course is their 21-year-old playmaker supreme. Palmer scored his second hat-trick in three games in a 6-0 drubbing of Everton. The result pled further misery on the Toffees who are now just two points above the drop zone, with the bookies slashing their odds on relegation to just 10/3. However, for the newly minted England international, it was a story of a continued rocketship-like trajectory.
Just 11 days prior, he also netted a blistering trio of goals in a thrilling 4-3 victory against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. As that particular game trickled into its dying embers, the Red Devils led by three goals to two, and popular live betting odds had pushed the hosts out to as long as 100/1. However, upstepped Palmer with goals in the tenth and 11th minutes of second-half injury time to secure the unlikeliest of turnarounds and no doubt make a lot of long-shot punters happy.
But with a 2-2 draw away at Sheffield United sandwiched in between those two goalfests, he was unable to become the seventh man in history to score back-to-back Premier League hat-tricks. These three players are the most recent to have done exactly that.
Erling Haaland
When Erling Haaland arrived at Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2022, many weren’t sure that he would live up to the billing. Yes, he had been a goalscoring behemoth in Germany and with Red Bull Salzburg before that. But there had been plenty of Bundesliga arrivals that had simply fallen far short of the lofty heights expected of them. Haaland immediately made the doubters eat their words with a brace on his debut against West Ham, but it was a mere fortnight later when he truly put everyone on notice.
The Blues headed into back-to-back home games against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest firmly expecting to secure six points. They did exactly that, but they weren’t expecting their new number nine to net just as many goals. But yet, he did. Back-to-back hat tricks took his tally to nine in just five games. And he didn’t stop there.
Haaland went on to net a mighty 52 goals in 53 games in all competitions, with 36 of them coming in just 35 Premier League matches. If that wasn’t enough, he went on to win the title with the Blues, as well as the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the club’s history.
Harry Kane (Twice)
The current campaign has been a disastrous one for England captain Harry Kane. His move to Bayern Munich last summer was supposed to be the catalyst for a plethora of trophies that had thus far avoided him in his goal-laden career. However, the Bavarians were dumped out of the German Cup by third-division Saarbrucken earlier in the campaign and they have since gone on to lose the Bundesliga title race for the first time in 12 years, ultimately being decimated by Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen.
But England’s all-time top scorer has still been in the goals, despite the lack of team silverware. He has rattled the back of the net on no fewer than 39 times in as many games this term, and it was those goalscoring exploits that promoted Germany’s rekordmeister to fork out £100m to secure his services.
During his time with Spurs, goals came in abundance, and he has twice racked up back-to-back hat tricks, the only player in Premier League history to do so. Back in the 2017/18 campaign, the HurriKane had a very Merry Christmas. He thumped home three goals as the North Londoners ran out 3-0 victors away at Burnley on December 23rd. Then on Boxing Day, he netted another hat trick in a 5-2 win against Southampton at Wembley.
While that was an incredible goalscoring return, just seven months prior, Kane had already accomplished that same feat. Towards the latter end of the 2016/17 season, Kane scored four goals in a 6-1 drubbing of reigning champions Leicester City, before bagging three more just five days later in an away fixture at Hull City.
